I typically don't like fleece in the sleeves of jackets because it makes layering a pain, but this one slides over other layers fine. I am also a fan of the grid fleece lining. I am always a fan of Polartec Alpha insulation and this jacket is no exception. It breathes very well, but this also means that it doesn't do much for wind. The DWR is also excellent for a jacket in this category. The outer fabric is a true softshell with ample stretch, unlike the static nylon ripstop used in things like the Atom or Proton. It actually displaced several of my Arc'teryx insulated jackets because it feels so much tougher. The cuff circumference could probably be reduced by at least a half inch and still be more than adequate.įabric - I really like the materials used in this jacket. This issue is exasperated by the generous sleeve length. They do not really taper from the elbow down, so the cuff is quite wide and it tends to work its way out from under my shell jacket. My only complaint fit-wise is the sleeve diameter. The hood is well sized and the single rear adjustment works well I am glad there is no aperture adjustment because I prefer the elastic edge. The hem falls at about belt-buckle level, which is a hair shorter than I like it. The upper chest in particular is patterned very well, and does not restrict movement at all, especially once you factor in the stretch of the fabric. The chest, shoulders, and sleeve length fit very well. It seems to be sized as an outer layer, but I prefer to wear it as a mid layer because I feel like that makes the best use of the grid fleece lining. The large Alpha was too wide through the midsection and about an inch too long. I own another Beyond jacket in large and it fits most similar to the medium Alpha. For reference, I am a standard large in Outdoor Research and a large in Arc'teryx, although I can take a medium in the latter for more relaxed jackets. I am 6'1", 190 lbs, 42" chest, 32" waist, and went with the medium after trying the large. It does fall short in terms of some details that you see with jackets like the Gamma.įit - I find this jacket to fit about a half size large. I'd compare it to a lightly insulated Arc'teryx Gamma MX. I'll start off saying that this jacket is an excellent buy for the price and I recommend it.
